The UK-based erectile dysfunction drug sildenafil, sold under the brand name Viagra, could soon offer the same benefits as Pfizer’s blockbuster erectile dysfunction drug, Cialis, a new study suggests.
The results of a large, phase III, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, double-dose, multicentre study, which included 625 patients with erectile dysfunction, were published today. It is hoped that the findings will prompt Pfizer to launch a generic version of sildenafil, which has recently become the first in a category called PDE5 inhibitor.
Pfizer, which makes the erectile dysfunction drug, is planning to launch a generic version of sildenafil on the NHS in 2017. Sildenafil, its active ingredient, is already available at much lower doses than Viagra and Cialis, and Pfizer is seeking approval to sell the drug on more generic forms of the drug.
Sildenafil is the first PDE5 inhibitor to be approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) for treatment of erectile dysfunction. It is also the first PDE5 inhibitor to be approved for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension, a potentially life-threatening heart condition.
The new study, which is part of the EMA’s PDE5 and PDE6 clinical trials, is part of a larger Phase III, double-blind, parallel group, randomised, double-dose study in men with erectile dysfunction.
The study, which was conducted at the European University Hospital and Medical Centre in Florence, will examine the efficacy and tolerability of sildenafil (Viagra) versus Cialis (tadalafil), as well as other PDE5 inhibitors, for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in the general population. The EMA is the scientific body of doctors, which regulates health care. Patients with erectile dysfunction and a history of previous heart attack or stroke should not take sildenafil.
It is the latest development in the treatment of sexual dysfunction, with sildenafil now available in 50mg, 100mg and 200mg doses. Cialis is already available at much lower doses than Viagra and is the first PDE5 inhibitor to be approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.

On Thursday, an official of the (Cobra) said that a new version of Viagra was approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration and will be available for purchase in the United States on Friday, when its generic version, Viagra Connect, is expected to be available on the same day.
Cobra, which is made by Pfizer Inc., has become the first erectile dysfunction drug to hit the U. market since Viagra first was developed in the 1990s. The new formulation of the drug allows it to be more easily absorbed, unlike Viagra and similar treatments which typically take about two weeks to become effective.
"This will be a convenient, once-daily treatment option for many men who are seeking relief from impotence and should be prepared for this," said Steve Zabar, a spokesman for the FDA.
But Viagra is not without side effects. While it is generally considered safe to use, the drug is not as safe as other prescription drugs that require more than a few milligrams of the drug.
The FDA has issued an advisory about Viagra's potential to cause sexual side effects, including a reported about three months ago, in an 18-month investigation by the New York Times.
"Although these side effects are uncommon and occur rarely, when treated appropriately and for the most part, they tend to diminish over time and may not become serious enough to require medical attention," the report said.
The agency also noted that men who have used Viagra and have experienced these side effects should stop using it and seek medical help.
Cobra is already available in the United States on prescription for erectile dysfunction. The drug, which is already available over-the-counter, is designed for use in the U. by patients who do not have erectile dysfunction.
"As with any prescription drug, you should always consult your doctor before taking it, even if you think it's right for you," said Paul Ricks, the agency's chief medical officer.
Cobra is not currently available as a generic drug in the U.
